  maytag_a608 (52).JPG - Wiped, chisled out pot-metal rust, and wire brushed.  Lubed splines with silicone grease.  The retainer clip holding what I guess is the top of the bearing seal is removed in this picture.  The lip that keeps the wire spring retainer is disintegrating, so I rotated it some to find a good spot.  Washed one small load of rags in hot water to clean up my mess, and then revisited the shaft at the seal with a clean paper towel.  There is some minor seepage.  I'll monitor this by pulling the (now easy to do) agitator every time I use the machine.
